Stuff happens. It is not what happens to you that shapes who you are, it’s how you react to what happens to you. Kate could have certainly given up when faced with adversity in her life, but she did not—she kept going.

Work with people you love. Too many times we choose to work with people who are not positive, not motivated, and not a positive influence in our life. Kate has decided whom she will and will not work with, and that has had a big impact on both her and her work. When she says, “I love my speakers,” she really means every one of those words.

Be able to laugh. Kate has the remarkable ability to laugh and is always joking around and using southern humor. When describing her husband who cheated, she said, “He wanted me to share my bed with some other woman—and, mama don’t play that way!” You just have to laugh at her refreshing sense of humor.

Be persistent. Kate’s mom taught her the value of persistence and hard work; stick to what it is that you dream of doing. Often we give up too soon.

Have perspective. Even at a young age, Kate was wise enough to understand the why behind her father’s fanaticism and realized it was a form of psychosis, not something that was her fault. She was able to analyze it on a different level.
